Sillery Gaon

Sillery Gaon

Sillery Gaon is an unstained Himalayan village located 96 km from New Jalpaiguri via Kalimpong town. Perched at an altitude of 6,000 ft, it offers a perfect romantic getaway. The village gets its name from a plant that grows abundantly in the region. Sillery Gaon provides a spectacular and serene view of Mt. Kanchenjungha and its allied peaks. The area is covered in Cinchona plantations, which were introduced by the British and are still cultivated today. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers seeking peace away from crowded places and city noise. Visitors can enjoy the true village atmosphere, the sounds of birds and insects, and the beautiful, clean environment.

A major attraction for tourists is the breathtaking view of the Kanchenjungha range from several viewpoints, including Ramitey and Tinchuley. Ramitey is a famous spot that offers an excellent view of the Teesta River with its 14 turns, alongside the majestic Kanchenjunga. Tinchuley, a nearby hilltop, provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas, including towns in Sikkim, Jeep La, and Nathula. Another notable site is the ruins of Damsang Fort.

Other nearby tourist attractions include the 300-year-old Sangchen Dorjee Monastery near Pedong, which features intricate wall paintings and a mummified body of a revered Bhutanese priest. Visitors can also see the 'Chyam' dance performed here in April and May. Other sites include Cross Hill near Pedong, the Sahid Park, and the majestic Rikisum viewpoint. The natural splendor of Kashyone village and the Aritar Lake (Lampokhiri) are also worth visiting, with boating facilities available. At Reshi Bridge, tourists can enjoy fishing and camping. Sillery Gaon is also a haven for avid bird watchers and offers opportunities for hiking and nature walks. The best time to visit is during the winter for clear views of Mt. Kanchenjungha, while the rainy season should be avoided due to heavy rainfall and increased humidity. Ultimately, the most rewarding activity is to simply sit and watch the mighty Mt. Kanchenjungha as its colors change with the day.
